“Abusive delirium, hurled at journalists and unprecedented targeting”

After the statements of the mayor of Volos Achillea Beau according to journalists, POESY and the Editors’ Unions made a relevant announcement, speaking of “unprecedented targeting”.

Both POESY and the Associations of Editors (ESIEA, ESIEMTH, ESIEPIN, ESPIT) express their support to the Union of Editors of Daily Newspapers of Thessaly, Central Greece and Evia (ESIETHStEE) “against abusive delusion, which launched against journalists and their unprecedented targeting the mayor of Volos Achilleas Beos”.

In the same announcement it is also stated that “as if the mayor’s infamy and the throwing of vulgar comments against specific colleagues were not enough, Mr. Beos went one step further, calling on the citizens of the area to commit acts of violence against them”. At the same time, it is emphasized that the only “crime” of the journalists is informing the citizens about the problems facing the city after the catastrophic floods.

POESY and the Editors’ Unions consider “forced the intervention of the judicial authorities for the protection of journalists and the social good of information, but also for the maintenance of social and democratic normality”.

At the same time, it is pointed out that “the next period of time we will inform the prosecutor of the Supreme Court about this, all competent bodies and Authorities, but also International Journalistic Organizations, asking for action for adealing with this extreme behaviourwhich will in no way be tolerated by anyone and if it originates”.

Achilles Beos: Spit on the journalists

It is recalled that the mayor of Volos, Achilles Beos during a press conference he addressed the journalists saying: “You scum of journalism, dirty journalists, those of you are like that and let me start unwashed and what can I not say. Dear Tasopouloudo you mind the water that is cut off at 10-11 because it is cut off, I’m teasing you; Why are you taking a bath? You take a bath once a month. What to you do you care baby».

He also added that “a Janetoulakou came out and measured from her tap that the water has coliform bacteria. Is this how measurements are made? Aren’t you a bit ashamed, you depraved ones? You are defaming your city. Shame on you guys. And I am addressing the citizens, on the street where you will see them (the journalists) spit on them. But even if you spit on them, they’ll think it’s crumbling.”
